When you think of Florida, you think of sand, sun and endless blue water, right? Even though we all love our coastlines here in Florida, there is much more to explore!
One such place is located about 30 minutes outside of Tampa, in Thonotosassa, FL. It’s the Hillsborough River State Park which covers nearly 3,000 acres of Florida landscape and has nearly 7 miles of hiking trails for you to enjoy. This is a great day trip, or camping trip, for the entire family!
Built in 1938, Hillsborough River State Park is one of Florida’s first state parks. It offers a wide variety of activities – hiking, camping, swimming (in the on site swimming pool), kayaking, fishing, picnic areas and a playground. There is even a concessions stand that provides canoe, bike and golf cart rentals, breakfast and lunch menus, camping and picnic supplies, and a variety of memorable souvenirs.
Do you enjoy a little adventure? This park is one of the few places in Florida where you can find up to Class II rapids!
The park is also home to a replica of a Second Seminole War-era fort. You can visit this site by going on a Ranger led tour, when the weather permits on the first and third Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. You can even visit when there are live reenactments, Fort Foster Rendezvous in January, and the Candlelight Experience at Fort Foster in December.
So, come on down and see all that Florida has to offer! Florida is more than just amazing beaches!
